So now it begins. I am officially a member of IATSE (International Association of Theatrical Stage Employees). $582.00 dollars, a drive to and from the city, $19 bucks for parking and an application later... i have my card. My card is called an ACT card (Associated Crafts & Technicians). I am not a member of a local, but needed to be a member of IATSE to tour. This means that when I do settle down somewhere, I can work more easily towards joining a local. Some locals will still make you do a 3 year apprenticeship, while others will immediately accept you.

Sunny Secaucus
Muggy and 85.
If that's not perfect working conditions, I don't know what is.
Today was my first day of work. We began show prep at PRG (Production Resource Group) in North Bergen, NJ. Myself, along with Randy (Moving Light Tech) and Davisson (Head Elec/Board) began piecing together our gear. I spent the first... 2 hours cutting tie line. This was a joy, cranking a wheel a couple thousand times. We had 6 Rolls of Tie Line, and we cut 5 of them. With the help of Keith and Brady (Head & Asst. Elec for Drowsy Broadway) we started to organize our gear by position. Randy and I labeled the yoke, and barrel of every instrument with it's position and unit number. We did this for all the conventional instruments. As the next 3 weeks progress, we will slowly be getting more and more gear. As we get it it will be labeled accordingly.
It seems like we got a lot done today, a lot more than they were expecting to get done. I'm hoping that we don't get too far ahead and they cut back on the days we work. If we do get ahead, they will tell us we don't need to come in, thus we don't get paid, thus we end up sitting in our hotel rooms in Secaucus NJ. Up until about...2 hours ago, that was a scary prospect. Then i got to my hotel.
I'm staying at the Ameri-Suites (currently being converted into a Hyatt). Up here on the 9th floor, I have a full wrap around couch, king size bed, 48" Hi Def television, and a nice bathroom set up. I'm guessing these won't be the level of accommodation once we are on the road. But for now, I think it will do. Time to go explore which chain restaurants we will be dining at tonight, then off to Stop and Shop to get supplies for the next 3 weeks.
Also, if you want me to clarify something I mention in a post, just let me know. I am sure I will be using a fair amount of lingo along the way.

And so it begins

Very soon Beth and I will begin work on the National Tour of The Drowsy Chaperone. I will be spending 3 weeks living in Seacaucus, NJ working at PRG putting together the show's electrics. Beth will still be in New York rehearsing with the cast.
With this blog, we are hoping to leave word of our travels, post pictures, and share stories about the places we go, the people we meet and the crazy things that happen with 40 people traveling together for 13 months.
