I bet most people are wondering why the blog has gone private.  Beth and I came to the conclusion, that due to the "hysteria" that is going to be surrounding the first few months of the tour, it was in the best interest of the cast, crew and others that we make the blog private.  From time to time, we are posting pictures of the places we go with cast and crew, and it would be better to have that information not be public, as you never know who may show up.  So for the time being, we are going to keep the blog private.  Please email us any email addresses that need to be added to the reading list.  We want as many of our friends and family to be able to keep track, but right now, we need to look out for our fellow company members.

Hello hello!

2nd day of technical rehearsals is over, and things are moving along.  It's great to see the lighting, sound, props,scenery and acting coming together.  Just a few scenes in and there have been some great images.  Its going to be fun to see it all finally come together in a few days once wardrobe, hair and makeup is added.

I want to take a moment to thank everyone for their comments.  It's great to get feedback and questions you have about the tour, the lifestyle, the business, and so on.  Please understand that there are some questions we wont be able to answer out of respect for company members (cast and crew).  Cath, you will just have to wait and see if the cone is the same as broadway ;)  This blog was started to keep friends and family up to date on our travels across the country, so please understand that this blog is going to be more about us, and less about the show. 

Time to relax with some House, and hit the sheets early this evening.

Day 7 & 8 (kinda)

Welcome to tech.  Checking in from the spot booth.  This afternoon is our first technical rehearsal.  The cast is in the building, and we are going to begin stepping thru the show.  Monday was a lot of touch up work, checking focus, refocusing, alterations, etc.  Props has began their set up, and we are rocking and a rolling along.  Things are beginning to get tight backstage, but it's actually a fairly easy deck to maneuver around, thus far.  Having been out front a bit in the past day or so, i can say i am loving the look of the show.  There are some very exiting looking numbers.

I'm settled in upstairs now, so it's going to be crunch time, while i continously listen to the show, and learn and tweak my call.  The lovely a.l.d. is going to have a blast listening to me blab on, while i get a feel for this.  Quite a few busy moments it appears.  Its going to be interesting to learn.  

Time to go listen to some more show and do some learning.  I'll check in tomm.

Load in Day 4-6

Sorry for the delay in updates.  Been mixing sleeping with visiting friends the past few evenings, so i have been slow to type out what has gone down.

Thursday brought nothing.  It was a day of getting settled with the scenic pieces that had been loaded in.  Some required some attention and some added electrical elements.  At coffee, the pieces i needed for my next major project arrived.  So I harnessed up, and with the help of a few local electricians on the ground, i installed the hardware needed to hang a VL2500 spot from the speaker towers.  Then we ran the needed cable to it, and other lights hung with in the speaker towers.  This was repeated for both SR and SL.  We ended the day Thursday with a few more elements to complete on the speaker towers before we could our units up.  

Friday morning, i finished up the Speaker towers, while Jason ran a few illuminators and Dim12's thru their paces, and figured out some problems we hadn't found before.  Dan began sorting thru the patch and creating groups to allow us to move along quickly while checking out the rig.  Some of the big, big scenic pieces arrived, the car, and another automated piece.  It was a game of staying out of the way of the carpenters while they assessed their situation.  Friday afternoon, the associate designer and an assistant arrived, and we began the FOH focus.  We got through both box booms, before the end of the work day.

This morning, we rolled in, with the goal of getting a fair amount of the show focused.  The morning was consumed by the Balcony Rail, which is full of templates, and zooms.  Not a lot of fun to focus, but nonetheless, 5 hours were spent over the rail focusing them.  In the afternoon, Jason focused overheads while Dan went over some console stuff with the ML Programmer.  

Tomorrow is a day off, which will be very nice.  I can't wait to sleep in.  As well as being a day off tomm, it is also Drowsy Chaperones closing day of shows, so i just wanted to take a moment and give a little congrats to them.  It was a pleasure touring with you all for 15 months, and it was a shame i wasn't able to finish out the last 2 weeks before a new project.  I had an amazing time with them, and look forward to working with them all again.

Load in Day 3

Today brought another Clark Transfer truck, this time full of scenic goodies, and some emergency electrics supplies.  The carpenters laid the deck for the bulk of the morning, and put up with us calling in scenic pieces to add lighting elements to them.  The entire front of house hang is done and circuited and tested.  Jason spent the day powering up the rig on stage and making sure all the movers were booting up just fine.  It was really a day of filling in odds and ends while waiting for bigger projects to develop.  Sound seems to be at a comfortable place, and carpenters just have a few pieces left to bring in.  Props is the next big department to join the fun on Sunday, followed by Wardrobe on Monday.  Its slowly going to get very tight backstage.  Its going to be nice to hit some of the larger houses on the route (Houston, Philly, 5th ave, jk)

So for now, i'm going to grab some dinner with high school friends.  Tomm is another day of getting the rig up to speed.  Hopefully the parts will come in that i need for my next large project, and that will be finished and out of our hair asap.  

Maybe i will be able to snap a few more pictures of the rig tomm.  I'll try to get a birds eye view from the jump at some point.

Day 2

Another day of load in down.  This morning we dumped a truck of soft goods and some flown scenery pieces, and that was followed by a full sound truck, plus some electrics on their.  We had some catch up work to do on the Truss, because some cables needed to be ran differently.  Between the front of house hang, working on the truss, setting up dimmer-land and refining a few things, we had a full day.  

Came back to the hotel this evening, and grabbed an early dinner with the other electricians, and then moved to a bigger room.  It's going to be a long month here, and a bigger room, for a little increase in rate is welllll worth it.

Tomm is a day off, so i think i'll head back home for the day.  Thats about it for today.

Day 1

For the record, dont expect daily update!  I'll be doing 8-5 days for the first week, but i doubt there will be much worth updating, nor will i have the energy.  Let's wait for the big updates till i am up in the booth, bored out of my mind.

Today, Dan (Head Elec) Jason (Moving Lights) Myself, and Jimmy (Production Elec) loaded in the electrics to the PPAC in Providence.  We had 12 locals with us, and in about 8 hours we got all of the electrics cabled and hung.  Doesn't sound like much on paper.... We did the entire rig on drowsy in 7 hours, but this is our first time.  Jason and I had not seen the Truss setups yet, and most of them needed adaptation to fit in with everything.  So for the first 2 hours, we gave the first truss all of our attention, and we got the system down.  While i finished up the last touches on that, Jason and some crew worked on the 2nd, and then my crew joined in, while they moved to the 3, and then we were pretty much set there.  The next step was to start attaching the Ladders.  We had the Ladders ready to go shortly after lunch.  And after they were attached, it was time to dress all the cable.

Tomm is when things will get interesting.  Sound and Carpentry will start brining in their gear.I'll put up the few pictures i have of things below.  More are certain to come.  

A Brand New Tour.

Brian here, checking in from Providence.  I am settling to my room at the Biltmore downtown.  I'll be here for a little over 4 weeks.  We start tech on sunday.   The electrics will do their "pre-hang" in the afternoon.  We have 3 truss electrics, 2 Strip Electrics, 1 "Practical" electric 6 ladders, 6 roving towers, 2 sound towers, and 63 Front of House units.  Thats not to mention the Car, 4 scenic portals, star drops and other various scenic elements that will have electrics in them.  Everything has been prepped and is ready to go on our end.  We will get a fair amount done on Sunday afternoon with more happening monday.  Tuesday will be a day off, because a major scenic element, the deck,  went haywire and had to be fixed, and won't be there till Wed morning. Then we fire it back up, and go at it Wed-Saturday, with Sunday off.  Should be interesting!

I am looking forward to getting this one going.  The rig looks like a lot of fun, and looks like it is going to be a pretty smooth in and out.  I'll be posting pictures, and things as we progress.  time to settle into the room a little more!

Random Post

Bonjour, from "Accident Waiting to Happen"  

I just happen to have this number off, and I felt like posting a little blog.  Im in the booth, running my 370 something show of Drowsy.  After tonight, i have 12 left.  4 here in Denver, and then 8 in Seattle.

Many of you know that, Beth and I will be soon moving to a new tour.  I finish up after the first week of seattle and beth will finish out Drowsy 2 weeks later, when it finishes Seattle.

I am flying back east to NYC to join the crew already in the shop at Hudson Scenic (and now Lighting)  I'll be in there tuesday, and then they want me to go see it twice on Bway on Wed.  That will be a joy and a half.  Thursday we travel to Providence, and then Friday we begin pre-hang and load in.  It all starts very quickly.  Not much time in between projects.  But the good news is, i will be in Providence for roughly a little over 4 weeks.  It will be great because friends and family will be able to visit, and should visit.  I'll be staying at the Biltmore downtown.  

As for other things, not much is going on.  The tour is starting to wind down, and people are leaving for other projects.  By the time it closes in Seattle, there will be only 6 original crew (out of 14) no original stage managers, 1 original company manager, but i cant remember her name and several new cast members will be in place.  

Im looking forward to the new project in Grease.  Working with new people and working on a new show.  It's going to be a fun time because we will be in some new cities and in some familiar places.  It will be nice to walk into a theatre, and have people recognize you, and you recognize people.  

Well, we're almost at the fake intermission!  I guess i should go and deal with some cues.  I believe beth will be checking in this weekend.  I can bet you she will do a big old spell check and grammar fix.  She doesnt care for my "conversational" style writing.  Oh well.  Ben kelley likes it, and thats all that matters.

Sacramento

Here I am with a catch-up post about Sacramento...

Our 2 weeks in Sacramento were such a blast! For some reason we all had these preconceived notions that Sacramento would be boring and awful with nothing to do. We were seriously mistaken. Sacramento is a beautiful city and we were here at the perfect time of year! We had 2 weeks of perfect fall weather which was great for exploring the many parks and cute neighborhoods in Sacramento. We should have known it would be a good town when we arrived at the airport baggage claim and saw this...

The nice weather was also great for our many company picnics that we held outside the loading dock on 2-show days. We used our fabulous grill we got in Kansas City and everyone brought things - steak, chicken, asparagus, pasta salad, cookies, cakes - you name it! It was a great, relaxing way to spend our time between shows. Getting a bite to eat, playing frisbee or scrabble and enjoying the fresh air.

One of the most exciting things we did in Sacramento was a group outing to Spaan's Cookie Company, about a half hour outside the city. The cookie company is owned by the Spaan family and their son Rick is the roomate of Jennifer, one of our new swings. They were incredibly gracious and gave us an in depth tour of the cookie factory!

FRESH BAKED COOKIES!

We got to eat the fresh, hot Russian Tea Cookies right off the belt from the oven!! At the end of the tour the Spaan family sent us home with several grocery bags full of cookies, bread and pies! Everyone in the company definitely enjoyed the treats!

Over the past few weeks we have been saying goodbye to some of our company members, little by little, as they leave "Drowsy" to start a new project. Here is a photo of Kevin, our Flyman's "Happy Trails"... Corona's and Rootbeer! (AFTER the show of course!)

Overall was a grand 2 weeks - I think one of my favorite cities on the whole tour!

San Diego!

Hello from Sacramento. Week 2. I am checking in to blog about our week in San Diego. It was amazing weather. 70's sunny, light breeze every day. You just can't ask for more. We were staying out at the Holiday Inn Seaworld and that was just a riot, because all the doors faced outside, and with our little building being three floors, it turned into a big dorm atmosphere. It was alot of fun. On the friday, Denny, Georgia and I went to "The World Famous San Diego Zoo" It was so much fun. We got a VIP Tour. First we went to the Koala house, where Jennifer introduced us to Kobe, a 2 year old Koala. See Below


All of Kobe's friends we're asleep. They ranged from being 2 years old, to the oldest being 15. Jennifer brought out Kobe to meet us.
He looked just like a teddy bear, but breathing.
To be able to climb tree's as well as they can, they have 2 thumbs. Its pretty interesting to see.
Next stop on our VIP tour was the Giraffe pen. There we got to meet Travis, a 3 year old male giraffe. We were able to feed him, and hang out for a little while. He was quite the character. A group just before us had been feeding him for quite some time. After they left, he wandered away, but as soon as he saw Georgia and I with the branches, he came right back.

So there's your catch up for San Diego. Beth will be checking in shortly with the Sacramento update. Sunday we have 1 show and then load it out for Denver. Can't wait. over and out

Hiatus

I must apologize for our prolonged absence. Between the month that was San Francisco, and the 5 week-wedding planning/vacation/bday/visit friends and family insanity, we were very neglectful of our blog. We are currently in San Diego, enjoying the weather of Southern California. We head to Sacramento on Monday morning. Hopefully by the time Drowsy wraps up we will be back into blogging mode.

For those who don't know, Drowsy will not be the end of our touring life. Both Beth and I will be going on tour with the national tour of Grease: You're The One That I Want! The show was cast on Broadway via a reality tv series, although we don't know if anyone from the show will be going out on the tour. We start tech in Providence on November 7th and will be opening there December 2nd. After that, it's a whirlwind tour of the US again!

LA - Week #1

Our first week in LA was fun - we had our first performance on Tuesday evening and officially opened on Wednesday. The theatre had offered everyone in the company a pair of tickets to the show for friends or family so it was a great audience! Our friends who came were Hannah Johnson, Tony Mannix, Amy Hilner and Emily Richmond (plus friend). After the show we had a little Wagner reunion at the Bonaventure Brewing Company at our hotel with Chris Bruce (who is on tour selling the Drowsy merchandise... or trying to at least...).




On Thursday, Brian, Hannah and I attempted to go to the beach, but we got a late start and had so many errands to run that we decided to just go back to the hotel and swim in the pool on the roof of the 4th floor.


Friday we finally made it to the beach! We went to Venice beach and had a blast. It was a beautiful day. Hannah and I took a walk and ended up walking almost the entire way to the pier in Santa Monica and back. (We thought Brian was taking a nap, but apparently he was not successful in falling asleep and was bored to tears. oops!)

This is a stop sign we saw walking back to the car. They replaced the "Y" in All-Way perfectly with an "R". Oh those clever people out there...



On the way home we stopped at In-N-Out Burger, a West Coast staple. Delicious milkshakes and fries!

On Sunday night, Hannah and I went to see "Wicked" at the Pantages theatre in Hollywood. Beforehand we walked around and I was a total nerdy tourist, taking pictures with all of the Hollywood Stars on the sidewalk.

After the show, we went to hang out with some of Hannah's friends at their apartment. We had lots of fun - and wine and cheese fondue too!

Ketch Up! - Grand Canyon-Vegas-LA

I figured Beth had written enough, so it's my turn to enlighten all the minds who tune into this blog.

After our short and fast week in the upper altitudes of SLC, We were heading into a week layoff. Being out west, a trip back east and then returning west again didnt make much sense to us. So after a little planning, we decided to drive to LA with some pit stops on the way.

Monday morning we picked up the car, packed it all up, and took off for the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. A beautiful drive down 15, 89, 89a and Highway 67 brought us to the Grand Canyon Lodge at the North Rim.

We checked into our little cabin and went down to watch the sunset. After watching the sunset, we had dinner at the lodge, followed by some star gazing. It was amazing how dark it got at night and how bright the stars were. Very beautiful.

The next morning we grabbed some breakfast and went for a hike on the Bright Angel Trail, a 45 minute hike out to an outcropping on the rim. It was a nice hike and gave us some spectacular views.

After a small snack and some refreshment we packed up the car for Leg 2 of the journey. (After a quick stop in the Grand Canyon gift shop... christmas presents anyone?!)

A 70 mile retracing of our steps set us on our way to Las Vegas. Another beautiful drive took us along the way. I will say, the most enjoyable part of the trip from Salt Lake City to the Grand Canyon to Las Vegas was the down hill nature of the journey. 10-20 mile stretches of 6% downhill grades, makes for amazing gas mileage. At one point we took a long winding road down into a valley, where out of the rocks came a bustling little suburb. We stoped for lunch before continuing onto Las Vegas. Shortly after 4pm we rolled into Las Vegas proper and arrived at the Luxor Hotel. We checked in, and took a nap. Beth was feeling under the weather.

That evening we set out for dinner at the MGM Grand. Our original plan was to eat at this italian place, owned by Emeril. Turns out, not so italian, more so, cajun fish house. Oh well. We went next door to Pearl, a fantastic chinese restaurant. We got.... Chicken Dumplings to start, followed by Almond Crusted Lemon Chicken, Sweet & Sour Pork, and Garlic Stir Fried Asparagus. Now, truth be told, we had to wait, quite a while for our food. We didnt complain, but we were just curious why our food was taking so long. As soon as the waiter realized we hadn't gotten our food he was extremely apologetic and got right to getting our food. (Plus, the food was amazing, and totally worth the wait!) In return for our patience we received two delicious deserts on the house. I'll describe em to you next time i see you, Beth says im rambling. Onto the next phase. ( we also went to Wolfgang Puck's restaurant at the MGM Grand and it was awesome!... ok moving on...)

On Wednesday morning, Beth went and had a spa morning. She got a manicure and pedicure at the Bellagio spa and then returned to our hotel for a massage. I slept in and then ventured around the casino at our hotel.

On Wednesday night we went to see Cirque Du Soleil's "O", their amazing water show. It was mind blowing. The set, the cast, the lighting, the rigging, the automation, the water aspect. It was an amazing spectacle to behold. It was a high point of my theatre going experience. Anyone who has the chance to go to Las Vegas, must see this show. Pure genious.

After the experience Wednesday night, we went home, and discussed the idea of getting tickets for Cirque's "Ka". Thursday morning, I woke up and called the concierge and he got us tickets for "Ka" 6th row center. Amazing. This was their martial arts show. Probably even more technically spectacular that "O" But not as entertaining. Ka featured a 50' deep abyss which one could not see into, and a 70-80' high proscenium. Once again, if i ever run into you, i will explain to you the marvel that is "O" and "Ka".

So during our visit to Las Vegas, Beth learned to play Blackjack. I must say, in addition to being a fast learner, she also was a fairly good winner, if not downright lucky. She had a good streak going, but hit some cold cards on our last night and ended up even. I too ended up pretty much even.

After our adventure in Las Vegas, we grabbed the car and took off for L.A. A very very boring drive. Flat, if not somewhat uphill, and killer on gas mileage. So we got into downtown around 4 and checked in to the hotel.

Beth wasn't feeling too great, since the cold she had ignore during our Grand Canyon and Vegas adventure was finally catching up to her. We pretty much just crashed, ordered room service and watched TV all night. It was 4th of July, and we didn't feel like hunting down fireworks, but we were able to see some out the window of our hotel!

Ok... this is Beth taking over now...

Saturday we pretty much just hung around the hotel relaxing, and then went to my cousin Kris and Mark's house in Simi Valley for dinner. We had a FANTASTIC time and a DELICIOUS dinner! Especially the homemade peach pie. Also, we played Wii and hunted for creatures in the back yard.

But the most amazing part of the whole night...

Now, i'm not just talking about an artichoke heart. I'm talking the whole shabang. It looked like this...

It was really great seeing Kris - who I hadn't seen in almost 10 years! - and so nice to finally meet her husband Mark.

Sunday, Brian and I went exploring a bit around Los Angeles. We went to 3rd Street in Santa Monica to do some shopping and then had dinner at Mr. Marcel's where the one and only Hannah Johnson works! She didn't know we were coming so it was really funny when we showed up. The food was great and the service was EXCEPTIONAL! After that we went to see "Wall-E" at the movie theatre across from our hotel and then headed home.

Brian started work the next day and our whirlwind layoff week was over.

Catch up! - Salt Lake City

After Kansas City we headed on to Salt Lake City, Utah. Since the 2 cities were so far apart, it was going to take the trucks longer to get there, so we didn't open until Wednesday night. This gave us all an extra day off, aside from our travel day. However, since we didn't open until Wednesday, we did 8 shows in 5 days. It was a pretty crazy week to begin with, and then everyone in the company started getting sick and passing it on to one another. Fortunately, we went right into a layoff week for everyone to rest up.

Salt Lake City wasn't the greatest stop for the Drowsy Tour, because we were so busy that we didn't get to do much. The biggest highlight of the week was getting to see Chris and Diana Carlston! We went out to dinner on Tuesday night and got to catch up after almost 10 years!! (I'll be seeing Courtney this week in LA!)

Also, some of you who are quite familiar with Drowsy, may be wondering how the Utah joke went over at the end of the show? It was an absolute showstopper! The audience laughed so hard they had to stop the show and wait for the laughter to die down before they could continue on. We could not have asked for a better response!

Catch Up! - Kansas City

Hello to you dedicated reads of the Beth and Brian blog, who, if you are reading this, are still checking our blog, hoping and praying that we have updated it. Well, today is your lucky day! A bona fide brand new post that has nothing to do with a slap-yo-mama good burger!

It has been quite an eventful month so we will start back in good old Kansas City, Missouri...
circa June 17, 2008...

The first thing you should know about the Starlight Theatre in Kansas City is that it is an outdoor ampitheatre. Yes, that's right, OUTDOORS! It seats 8,000 people and is like being at summer camp. Since the theatre is outdoors we only did 6 evening shows, and they didn't begin until 8:30pm, and even then it was light out for the first 45 minutes of the show.

The Starlight Theatre is in the middle of Swope Park and only has 1 road that leads to and from the theatre. I'm sure you can imagine the kind of traffic that builds up at the end of a performance! Therefore, instead of sitting in traffic, everyone in the travelling and local company has a tailgate party every night after the show. (The fact that no one comes to our show and therefore there was no traffic did not deter us from partying!) Needless to say, Drowsy Chaperone took these parties to a new level of ridiculousness.

Tuesday, June 17 - OPENING NIGHT: The party was held by the theatre and it was a lovely opening night party. There was food and drinks and everyone enjoyed themselves.

Also, during the day on Tuesday, Denny & I went to Home Depot and purchased a grill. That's right - a full blown grill. We take our parties seriously.

The company and stage management teams hosted the first party and decided on a Monkey Luau theme. We went all out, complete with hawaiian music, leighs, blow up monkeys, monkey hats, hawaiian shirts and, the topper of it all - ORANGE DRINK COOZIES that said "The Drowsy Chaperone: Luau June 2008". We served shrimp and pineapple skewers, mango salsa, Corona and sodas. Oh - and we had HULA hoops too!

Thursday night it was our crew's turn to host the party. They decided to do a Mexican Fiesta. They made fajitas and guacamole, had 3 pinatas, bought fake mustaches for everyone to wear and had poppers on the table. Everytime someone set one off everyone would shout "AY YI YI YI YI!!!! ARRIBA!" and other stereotypical mexican things. They even had the "Our Lady of Guadalupe" candles from the dollar store. Also, we did the limbo and the Macarena.

Saturday, Georgia volunteered to host the last of the tailgate parties. The theme she decided on was "Americana". We had hamburgers and grilled chicken, chips, pickles, rootbeer floats and a pie eating contest.

Oh yea - we roasted marhsmallows for s'mores too!

On Sunday, we packed it up and headed off to Salt Lake City. All in all - one of the best weeks I've had on tour yet!

Now you may be asking yourself, what has happened to this grill that was used for all of these festivities? Well, the grill had a road box built for it and it travels on our truck with us. So we can cookout wherever we are!
